Goal Succession (लक्ष्यको निरन्तरता वा सुधार)
Meaning of Goal Succession
Goal succession means creating new goals after the existing goals are achieved or creating new goals when the current goals need to be adjusted. Sometimes, there might be changes in the environment or a goal may become difficult to complete. In such cases, the organization may modify or add smaller goals to support the main goal. This process is goal succession.
Goal succession does not cancel the original goal, but improves or extends it. It helps the organization adjust to new situations and achieve long-term success.
Reasons for Goal Succession
1. Achievement of Original Goal
When an organization achieves its original goal, it does not stop there. It creates a new goal to continue progress. For example, if the goal was to open 5 branches and that goal is achieved, the next goal might be to expand into a new city. This helps the organization move forward and grow.
2. Non-Achievement of Original Goal
Sometimes, the goal is not fully achieved. This may happen due to a lack of time, resources, or unexpected challenges. In such cases, the organization may choose to revise or extend the goal, rather than cancel it. This is also goal succession because the goal is continued in a new form.
3. Change in Environment
The external environment keeps changing — due to market trends, technology, politics, or competition. If the original goal no longer fits the new situation, the organization may adjust or add new goals.
Goal Displacement (लक्ष्यको विस्थापन वा बिर्सिने अवस्था)
Meaning of Goal Displacement
Goal displacement happens when the original goal is completely replaced by a new one. This usually occurs when the old goal becomes impossible or useless due to big changes. In goal displacement, the original goal is removed, and all efforts are now focused on the new goal.
This is a serious change. It means the organization must shift direction for survival. Goal displacement can happen when there is confusion, conflict, or when people follow the process but forget the real purpose.
Reasons for Goal Displacement
1. Goal Conflict
When an organization has more than one goal and there is no agreement among members, goal conflict occurs. If employees focus more on their personal goals instead of the organizational goal, confusion arises. This leads to goal displacement, where the main goal is ignored.
2. Unclear Goals
If the goals are unclear, vague, or too broad, employees may not understand what to do. Even if they work hard, they may not achieve the goal properly. This creates frustration and leads to displacement of the real goal.
3. Employee Attitudes
If employees have a negative attitude toward management decisions or goals, they may not work sincerely. Lack of motivation and cooperation can cause the team to lose focus on the main goal, leading to goal displacement.
4. Excessive Delegation
Managers must delegate authority, but too much delegation without control can create problems. If subordinates make decisions without proper supervision, the original goal may be forgotten or changed. This causes goal displacement.
5. Means-End Inversion (साधन–उद्देश्यको उल्टो व्यवस्था)
The “end” is the goal, and the “means” is the way to achieve it. Sometimes, employees focus too much on the process (means) and forget the real goal (end). For example, following rules strictly but forgetting why those rules exist. This is called means-end inversion and leads to goal displacement.
Summary Tip:
Goal Succession = Modify or add goals to support the original goal
Goal Displacement = Remove the original and set a completely new goal

Goal Succession and Displacement
Q) What is organizational goal? Why goal succession and displacement is required? Explain. [3+7] [2079 Q.No.11]
Meaning of Organizational Goal
Organizational goals are the targets an organization wants to achieve. These goals give direction and purpose to all members. Every activity inside the organization is planned to reach these goals.
Goals help the organization know what to do and how to do it. These goals also bring everyone together with a clear purpose. When all employees work toward the same goal, the organization moves forward in the right direction.
Why Goal Succession and Displacement is Required
Organizations make goals to guide their work. But goals do not always stay the same. Sometimes goals are completed, and sometimes they become difficult or useless. That’s why goal succession and goal displacement are needed.
Goal succession is required when the original goal is achieved. After completing one goal, the organization should make a new goal to move forward. For example, if a company opened 5 stores, it can now plan to open more. This helps the company grow.
Sometimes, the goal is not fully achieved due to problems. In that case, the goal should be adjusted or extended. This is also goal succession. It helps the organization stay on the right track.
On the other hand, goal displacement is needed when the original goal is unclear, outdated, or no longer useful. Sometimes, the company forgets its real goal and starts working on something else. This can happen because of employee confusion, poor planning, or too many goals. In such cases, the organization may need to change the goal completely.
For example, if the goal was to offer free services but now there is no money, the organization may change it to paid services. This helps the organization to survive, even though the goal has changed.
In short, goal succession helps continue progress, and goal displacement helps fix problems when the goal is no longer useful. Both are important to keep the organization active and successful.
Q) What is goal succession? Give an appropriate example of goal succession. [4+6] [2077 Q.No.11]
Meaning of Goal Succession
Goal succession means creating new goals after the existing goals are achieved or creating new goals when the current goals need to be adjusted.
When the original goal is achieved or cannot be completed as planned, the organization does not stop. It creates a new but related goal to keep moving forward. In this process, the main goal is not removed — it is supported, extended, or adjusted based on the situation. Goal succession helps the organization grow, adapt, and stay focused.
Example of Goal Succession
One example of goal succession is when a company sets a goal to open 5 new branches in one year. After achieving that, it sets a new goal to open 3 more branches in rural areas. The company does not stop but continues with a fresh target.
Another example is a retail company that planned to increase market share by 10%. But due to the pandemic, more people started shopping online. So, the company changed its goal — it focused on increasing online sales or improving its mobile app.
Both examples show goal succession — the organization updates or adds a new goal based on achievement or change in situation. This helps the organization stay on track and grow continuously.
Q) How goal succession takes place? Explain the conditions responsible for goal succession. [4+6] [2075 Q.No.11]
Goal succession takes place when an organization continues, adjusts, or adds new goals to match changing situations. It happens after a goal is achieved or when the original goal cannot be completed as planned. The organization does not cancel the goal but updates or extends it to keep moving forward. This helps the organization stay active, grow, and adjust to new needs. Goal succession ensures that the efforts do not stop after one goal but continue with a new direction or focus.
Conditions Responsible for Goal Succession
There are three main conditions that lead to goal succession:
- Achievement of Original Goal: When an organization achieves its original goal, it does not stop there. It creates a new goal to continue progress. For example, if the goal was to open 5 branches and that goal is achieved, the next goal might be to expand into a new city. This helps the organization move forward and grow.
- Non-Achievement of Original Goal: Sometimes, the goal is not fully achieved. This may happen due to a lack of time, resources, or unexpected challenges. In such cases, the organization may choose to revise or extend the goal, rather than cancel it. This is also goal succession because the goal is continued in a new form.
- Change in Environment: The external environment keeps changing — due to market trends, technology, politics, or competition. If the original goal no longer fits the new situation, the organization may adjust or add new goals.
